GCD Map — 2A

Cartographers – Kim, Cameron, Stella

The name of our project is called the ‘memory map of London/GCDMAP’. The project is about bringing the gcd cohort together by sharing recommendations of an area in London. The outcome of our project consisted of an Instagram page and prototype app designs. These outcomes consisted of utilising the London tube map to create an interactive map allowing people to share what their favourite station is and the reason behind their choice. The project helped to make connections between people, create a feeling of being part of a broader community, and allow people who are not too familiar with the city of London to learn more about it.

Research process
First prototype
Second prototype– We reflected on the feedbacks we received and decided to keep the map but change the colour to black, where it is more UAL related.
Final prototype– This is the final version of our app idea, here our audience could get to see what others’ favourite stations are like, they could also talk and communicate their ideas with each other.
We also prototyped on an Instagram account, we presented the responses from our survey in a united map format and presented through the posts. We also put on images that link to this station and the person’s reason of choosing this station. On the last page we also tag the person so people could also communicate and get to know each other through this account. This Instagram account idea works out very well, we received many positive feedbacks from people.

  1. Great idea! To take this idea further it would be great to see how the Underground base map might change or distort with the user input. There are lots of interesting projects around the idea of creating personal maps or adding annotations to existing maps, and they get really interesting when they allow the participants’ input to change the shape and design of the map, eg. biomapping.net
